Occasionally I get inquiries from designers asking about the possibility to a gradient to blend two colors of terrazzo rather than having a traditional hard edge using a divider strip between colors. I wanted to expand upon this topic of merging colors using terrazzo and show different examples of project using different techniques that yield different results.
There are several ways to achieve color blending so its important to understand the vision for the final finished product in order to determine the correct method of merging terrazzo colors.
Gradient and Tapered Density Terrazzo Option:
1) Tapered density of terrazzo aggregrates with same resin colors
2) Tapered density of terrazzo aggregates and different resin colors
3) Merging resin colors using the same aggregrate mix
4) Merging resin colors using different aggregate mixes
First we will look at using the aggregate to create the gradient. This can be done using the same resin color for both mixes or changing the resin color. The concept here is to take the two different color mixes and merge them by tapering the density of the aggregate from one mix to another. This is customizable and the aggregrate density can be tapered over different distances to greate a more subtle effect. Below are some different illistrations using these methods.

The next option is to use the resin color and blend them while the are wet just as an artist will merge colors while painting. This can be done over different distances to great a more subtle or dramatic effect.
Here is a great video to show the process:
This can be done using the came aggregate mix and just changing the resin colors or using entirely different mixes.

Other project just want a more organic transition between colors leaving a rough or blended line.

This can also be done using a hard line but eliminating the divider strip so you get color to color transistions. The contractor simiply poured the terrazzo and used a temporary strip to terminate one color. Then removes the strip and poured the other color directly up to it.

Here is a short video of the contractor mergin these colors below.
Below is the finished result:

Here are a few other terrazzo projects featuring blended terrazzo colors:

We always recomend doing a mock up for any blended, gradient or tapered density terrazzo. I hope this post has been helpful. Please reach if I can be of assistance in developing a mock up for your project. Thanks!
